Google Maps returns to Apple Watch after 3 years of absence

Google Maps has returned to the Apple Watch after a three-year absence and offers step-by-step directions on your wrist.

Google Maps first landed on the Apple Watch in 2015, but it was removed in 2017 with little fanfare. The search giant teased its return last month, and Apple Watch owners can now get the app from the App Store.

The clock display shows tiled step-by-step instructions on how to get to a destination, along with arrival times. The home screen displays the estimated arrival time for the “Current Trip”, along with travel times home, work and more.

To use Maps, you add a new location to your phone app, and then continue your journey on your watch. You can set the travel mode, whether by car, public transport or walking, right on your watch. After that, you can choose from several possible routes.

Instructions are easy to read, on cards with large icons indicating directions to turn.

Live maps are not displayed in the app, and you must have a good connection to your iPhone to use it, but at least now you can navigate to a destination from your phone to your desktop to your laptop.
