Google Discontinues Daydream VR Headsets

Google’s mobile-centric virtual reality platform is no longer officially supported by the company. The company confirmed that it will no longer update the Daydream software and will not sell the Daydream View mobile headphones.

Google has slowed down Daydream for a while. Daydream was not mentioned at the company’s 2018 I / O developer conference or at its hardware event last year. “There has not been the widespread consumer or developer adoption that we expected, and we have seen a decline in the use of Daydream View headphones over time,” said a spokesperson. Although the system had potential, “we noticed some clear limitations that prevent smartphone virtual reality from being a viable long-term solution,” the spokesperson said. “In particular, asking people to put the phone on a headset and losing access to the applications they use during the day creates a lot of friction.”

Google launched Daydream View alongside the first Pixel phone in 2016, and several other phone makers, including Samsung, added support for it over the years. After product launches in 2016, Google quickly abandoned its virtual reality efforts. Google has shown a spin on virtual reality after Apple’s announcement of ARKit and turned its AR Tango platform into ARCore, an AR development platform. “We are investing heavily in useful augmented reality experiences like Google Lens, augmented reality walking navigation on Maps, and augmented reality in search that use the smartphone camera to bridge the digital and physical worlds, helping people do more. with what they see and learn about the world around them, ”a Google spokesperson said in a statement.

Since Facebook has still continued VR efforts, especially with the new Oculus Quest 2 release, Google is now not part of it with Daydream.
