It’s no real surprise, but the Daydream VR app is no longer officially supported by Google as of Android 11, marking the end of the line for the mobile virtual reality platform that was first introduced in 2016.
The 2019 Pixel 4 didn’t work with the Daydream View headphones, and Google stopped selling the headphones around the same time, so there was no real expectation that the platform would be supported in the future anyway.
Now it’s official: “Daydream VR software is no longer supported,” Google says in a support document. “You may still be able to access the service, but you will not receive any more software or security updates.”

- Now we have iPhone 13 rumors
“Thanks for using Daydream View,” the support document continues. “The Daydream VR app is no longer supported by Google and may not work properly on some devices running Android 11 or later.”
No more daydreaming
While this doesn’t mean that the Daydream View headsets will suddenly stop working with existing apps and games, it seems like an Android 11 could start to have an impact on how well the Daydream VR app works.
Like headsets like Samsung’s Gear VR, the idea with Daydream View was for you to insert your phone to provide the display and processing power. The headsets were basically just a way to view VR apps on your phone.
Today, technology has progressed to the stage where standalone headsets like the Oculus Quest 2 have everything built in – no phone required. Meanwhile, Google doesn’t seem as excited about VR as it used to.
Both Google and Apple have been busy adding augmented reality features on Android and iOS (mixing real-world and digital elements, which is apparently more of a priority than VR right now when it comes to mobile devices.
