PlayStation fans who paled to Sony’s bold black and white design for the PlayStation 5 now have a monochrome option, thanks to accessory maker Dbrand.
Dbrand now sells replacement plates called Darkplates to customize the color of your PlayStation 5, and as long as the color you want is matte black, that’s fine. The Dbrand website currently lists customization options for both the disc edition and the digital edition of the PS5, although the digital edition plates are not for sale yet. One set of exterior plates costs $ 49 (excluding shipping) for the disc edition.
The outer plates are not a skin. They are completely new components that will allow you to replace the side and middle faceplates of your PS5. So you will have to install them yourself. Sony did a teardown of the PS5 in October, which shows how the components come off.
But the demand is high. Dbrand has already used up his first crafting runs of his Darkplates, and the earliest he can get a game is May 2021.
Dbrand is being cheeky about his new product and says on his website, “Go ahead, sue us.” Presumably, it’s a reference to another company’s attempt to sell black PS5 replacement faceplates under the name PlateStation 5. The company changed its name, but said Sony had threatened legal action over its aftermarket faceplates and finally canceled all orders.
