As part of the ongoing Great Ethiopian Run (GER) campaign to promote healthy living among the public in Ethiopia, the GER has announced plans to organize a 5km virtual race. All funds raised from the race will be donated to the fight against the COVID-19 virus. This occurs when a donation of 500,000 birr was previously made by the Great Ethiopian Run for Covid-19 National Fundising Fund Committee.
“Stay Safe Ethiopia” is a campaign launched by the Great Ethiopian Run (GER) to encourage the public to stay safe and healthy during this time and to support government efforts to protect our citizens from the spread of the pandemic of coronavirus.
Registration for the race called “Stay Safe Ethiopia – 5km virtual race” began on Monday May 4 with the race itself over a five-day period in early June, organizers announced.
At the launch of Monday’s race, renowned artist Biruk Yeshitila, in the presence of the Merewa Choir group, will attempt to break his record for the Great Ethiopian Run 2015 of 135 seconds to complete 50m.
“Which, if accomplished, will result in a promise on its behalf to fight the coronavirus COVID-19.” Biruk is an inspiration to us all. If he commits to this challenge, then we should all do it, “said Dagmawit Amare of the GER, who oversees plans for the race.
Participants are asked to register by phone or visit the GER website where they will receive details on how to register for the race. More information about the breed is being given through a group of telegrams for those who have registered. A registration fee of 100 birr has been established for participants with all fees to be donated to combat COVID-19.
“This is a typical Great Ethiopian Run initiative,” said Michael Mesfin, who has already decided to enroll in the race. “It encourages us to stay in shape. But it is about more than sport and our own physical condition. It captures the spirit of the moment, where as a country we need to unite, protect ourselves and help others. Just by participating, we can all have that winning feeling, and I, for my part, will encourage many of my friends to participate. ”
Participants will use an application to record the race distance and the finish time. Details on how to use the application will be given after the participants register for the race. Participants also have the opportunity to design their own race number that they can use when completing the race. The idea is to give participants the opportunity to use their own slogan to express their way of wanting to join in the fight against the virus.
There is a maximum number of 500 places available for the race. Each participant in the virtual race will receive their own finalist medal, which will be delivered to their homes.
