The Coalition will attempt the Gears 5 Story DLC in December, Gears developers told IGN, and it will be available on Xbox One, PC, and Xbox Series consoles.
“All I can say is December and the title is Hivebusters, so I could give you a little clue as to what that content might contain,” said Zoe Curnoe, Gears 5 Lead Producer. “That will also be available in the new consoles, so it will be optimized for those two. “
In Gears 5, the Hivebusters are a squad of three who never appear in the campaign, but instead star in the new Escape mode. Keegan, Lahni, and Mac from Team Scorpio are the default squad (though you can enter with one of your choice) that infiltrates Swarm’s hives on what would be considered suicide missions to destroy enemy fortresses from the inside. The Scorpio team doesn’t have much of an identity in Gears 5, although they do have an origin story in the Gears of War: Hivebusters comics.
In addition to an estimated 3-4 hour watch time, Curnoe said more DLC details will be shared in early December, including whether or not it will cost anything. Members of The Coalition previously said they weren’t interested in developing story DLC for Gears. Curnoe said the philosophy of the statement remains true in the sense that they do not want to withhold anything when developing a campaign, but instead chose to develop the expansion after fan requests.
Mike Rayner, studio technical director for The Coalition, also mentioned that the story DLC will be the first Gears story to be revised, tweaked and polished on the X Series and S Series during original content development rather than updates made. then.
“So the things that we’re doing with global lighting and constant mapping I think are a good example, and we’ve made sure the content is really set up to take advantage of that,” Ryaner said. “The ultra-res textures are already there and we can fine-tune them and make sure they actually display in 4K resolution with the additional memory we have on these consoles and the ability to stream them super fast.”
Gears 5 will also receive a campaign update with its New Game + mode in November. Be sure to read about what that entails alongside the major multiplayer updates in IGN’s interview with The Coalition, and for all the games coming to Series X at launch, check out the IGN Series X launch guide.
