In 2018, Samsung reportedly discussed its progress in the cameras below the screen during an event in China. Two major leaks hint that the technology is ready for commercialization and we may see it next year.
Under-panel cameras have their own challenges, largely due to lower light transmission rates that could affect image quality. There is also the issue of aesthetics due to the discrepancy between the pixel per inch (PPI) of the camera area and the rest of the screen. This is something that the general manager of Redmi, Xiaomi sub-brand Lu Weibing, has publicly featured. OPPO’s prototype you demonstrated last year had similar problems.
Ice Universe claims that Samsung is doing much better in this regard and that its under-display camera technology is much better than the implementations we’ve seen so far. The company is interested in further improving the technology, so we probably won’t see it in the Galaxy S21 (S30).
2021 looks good for UPC at Samsung. If not S21, double 3 …

Supply chain expert Ross Young also weighed in on the discussion and is pretty confident that Samsung’s under-display camera will make its debut next year. If the company doesn’t outfit the Galaxy S21 with the technology, we’ll likely see it in the Galaxy Z Fold 3.
The iPhone notch is apparently coming out too
Apple is another company that appears to be working on an on-screen camera. If Apple cracks the code for next year, The successor to the iPhone 12 will likely end the notch, something famous Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had predicted in 2019.
On the surface, Apple has a soft spot for Notch, but in fact, it is working hard to overcome the under-display camera and folding technology. Perhaps next year, Notch will disappear without a trace.

These speculations are also in line with a Patent application illustrating an iPhone without notches. The company is also said to be working on a screen Touch identification.
Ice’s tweet also credits a recent report on Apple’s eagerness to bring up a Foldable iPhone ASAP.
