Former Prime Minister Fikreselassie Wogderes died on Saturday at the age of 75 in the capital Addis Ababa, Borkena has learned.
He served as Prime Minister for four years under Colonel Mengistu Hailemariam. He was one of the key leaders of the Ethiopian revolutionaries of the Ethiopian Defense Force. Before emerging as a leader in the late 1970s, he was serving in the Ethiopian Air Force.
As a member of the Ethiopian Air Force, he was sent to the United States for study prior to the Ethiopian Revolution.
At some point in 2013, he published the history of the Ethiopian revolution from his perspective under the title “egna ena Abiyotu”, which translates to “We and the revolution.”
After the TPLF, now believed to be in the dustbin of history, assumed power in 1991, Fikreselassie was one of Colonel Mengitu Hailemariam’g’s government officials who was arrested and spent twenty years of his life in prison.
Like many of Colonel Mengistu Hailemariam’s members, he has a reputation for being a man of integrity when it comes to corruption.
Colonel Mengistu Hailemariam is said to have great respect for him, as witnessed by journalist Guenet Ayele Gruenberg, who she interviewed published a book titled “Memories of Colonel Mengistu Hailemariam”
“Comrade Fikreselassie was among my trusting and trustworthy comrades. I had a hard time accepting his death. He was a positive friend who was by my side until the period of separation due to the course of history. Like many of us, he dedicated his life to the revolution and the people, and he had no private property, ”Guenet Ayele quoted Colonel Mengistu.
Details of the funeral are not available at this time.
