Ever since the PS5 went on sale last year, gamers have been scrambling to get hold of the new console. But it has been difficult, almost impossible, to find where to buy PS5. Supply is low, demand is high, and resellers are ruining everything for everyone.
Frankly, I don’t have time for all of that. Not just because of the effort that goes into it, but because I’m much more interested in a different console that’s on the horizon. It is said that a Nintendo Switch Pro 4K with OLED could arrive before the end of the year, and that is something that really excites me.
It is impossible not to love my Switch
My consoles have been very neglected in recent years, mainly because adult life has left me without the time or energy to play games very often. There have been countless times when I chose a game only to forget what was going on and what it was supposed to do.
I had to reboot the Doom 2016 reboot four times over the years, because I turn on my PS4 and find myself completely lost. Like Gandalf in the Mines of Moria. Fortunately, I’ve never made it past the first few levels, so there are very few consequences lost.
It’s a totally different story on Switch. I may not have enough time to play the Switch as much as I would like, but the nature of the console makes it much easier to pick it up at sporadic intervals. In fact, my Switch has not connected to its dock for almost two years.
It doesn’t matter where I am. I’ve played Switch on the couch while my girlfriend watches TV, in bed when I can’t be bothered to move all day, even on a long-haul flight across the Atlantic. You know, in the days when traveling between continents was really possible.
Now is the point where I have put off purchasing various games due to simple rumors that they might appear on the Switch at some point. The latest example is Crash Bandicoot 4. I’d love to play it, and while I could pay up to $ 60 for a console version and play it today, I’d rather be patient and have the freedom to play on the Switch. Also, it’s coming out next week so I don’t have to wait long.
The Switch Pro is an opportunity to troubleshoot the Switch
Nintendo has consistently denied that there are any plans for an updated Switch, but the rumors never cease. To be honest, I’m not surprised, because the mere prospect of a better Switch excites me.
The console we have now is great, but it is far from perfect. Its graphics are acceptable, but not the best, and the battery life is abysmal. There are also other issues like the flimsy kickstand, the Joy-Con’s constant drift risk, and the fact that it doesn’t support wireless headphones without a third-party adapter.
The Switch Pro may not fix all of those problems, but it would help a lot. After all, a more powerful Switch means you should be able to play bigger, more resourceful games. And not just games ported from other consoles.
Can you imagine what Breath of the Wild would look like in 4K HDR? The game looks amazing already, but the Switch’s hardware can only go so far. It may even be enough for me to connect my console to the TV.
As long as it’s not Wii U 2.0
My only concern is the rumor that the real handheld Switch Pro will only have a 720p screen. I really hope it is fake or that there is a better version available. Because it’s 2021, even cheap smartphones come with Full HD displays now.
It’s been a long time since a Nintendo console was considered powerful compared to the competition, but sticking with 720p would be an insult.
Nevertheless. I’d rather wait for the Switch Pro than go through the hassle of trying to get a PS5 or Xbox Series X. Not that I really could if I wanted one, given everything that’s going on.
Don’t get me wrong, I am aware that the Switch Pro is going to have similar problems. The original Switch may be four years old, but it’s still popular enough that there will be a serious shortage throughout 2020.
Imagine how bad it will be when the Switch Pro arrives. Especially considering the amount of scalping that is being done with the new limited edition Zelda Joy-Cons.
But hey, I’m looking forward to it anyway. I love my Switch, and if I’m going to have to battle scalpers and bots for months to get my hands on a new console, I’d rather it be a Switch Pro than a PS5. And if I can wait for the games to come to Switch, I can also look forward to a new console.
