The iPhone 12 is supposed to offer a smaller notch and other design tweaks, but the iPhone 13 could be radically different, according to a new leak. In fact, the iPhone 2021 could be Apple’s first fully portless smartphone.
So is. No more Lightning port. And that would mean there is no USB-C port either. IPhone 13 would only charge wirelessly.
☝️ yes. An iPhone without a port will arrive next year. Never USB-C. Eventually they will all be useless.May 13, 2020
Despite international pressure for Apple abandon your Lightning port to charge USB-C, it seems the company would rather have no port to make the switch. “Never USB-C,” technology expert Jon Prosser said on Twitter yesterday, confirming earlier reports that the iPhone 13 lineup will feature a model without a port.
“An iPhone without a port will arrive next year,” said Prosser. “Eventually everyone will be useless.”
Prosser, who has provided us with quite a few recent leaks from iPhone 12, AirPods Studio, and Apple Watch 6, also has an idea of Apple’s plans for 2021 products. IPhone 13 is more than a year away, but this assumption change in cargo could mark a significant change in the company’s vision.
A portless smartphone has been proposed and conceptualized multiple times, but the major manufacturers have yet to make it happen. Apple has held on to its proprietary Lightning port instead of switching to USB-C for user convenience.
But in January, the European Union voted in favor of a universal charging standard. The details and implementation of the decision have yet to materialize, and it appears Apple isn’t expecting that to happen.
Instead, Apple may be planning to make iPhones portless, relying on wireless charging to deliver juice to devices. And with the once-aborted AirPower wireless charging pad, which officially returned from the dead, Apple’s portless iPhone puzzle pieces come together.
To make an iPhone without a port attractive, Apple would need to deliver wireless charging that is as fast or faster than wired charging. Right now, the iPhone 11 can support just 7.5 watts for wireless charging. But the cable charge is 18 watts.
There is no indication of when AirPower could hit the market, but we are not sure what will happen this year. While we could hypothetically learn about it at WWDC 2020 next month, it’s hard to believe it’s ready in time for a fall release alongside the iPhone 12.
It seems that it makes more sense for Apple to present AirPower in its final form alongside an iPhone 13 without a port, marketing the two as the image of the future without cables.
