Ethiopian authorities wrote a letter to the editor of Foreign Policy Magazine to protest what they called “Serious misrepresentation of police operations in Ethiopia” in the report the magazine published this week on the war in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia State of Emergency Fact Check shared on its social media page the letter detailing the points that are misrepresented in the “report” published by Foreign Policy magazine.

He called the report “an epitome of outspoken mercenarism.”

Letter to the editor of Foreign Policy magazine

Serious misrepresentation of law enforcement operations in Ethiopia

The piece begins with outright lies from its opening statement onwards. He begins by describing the conflict as if the Prime Minister “launched a war” when in reality it was the TPLF that started the conflict with an organized and premeditated siege and massacre of members of the Northern Military Command. This fact is not controversial as TPLF leaders openly admitted that they launched what they described as a “pre-emptive defensive strike” against the military.

The notion that TPLF is only reacting to provocations completely misrepresents the reality of the past two years. For the first time in thirty years, the threat to the peace and security of citizens is overwhelmingly posed by entities other than the government. If the government was to be blamed, it would be for failing to neutralize the threat to the life and safety of the citizens of TPLF and other belligerent entities until now. Most citizens regret the federal government’s patience in not intervening quickly when outbreaks of violence arise.

The piece misses the essential point: the calculation of TPLF to trigger an armed confrontation with the Federal Government is the belief that through an internationally negotiated agreement and appealing to the highly publicized call of the international community, you will be able to secure immunity for your past misdeeds and a power-sharing agreement that will give him a position at the center, beyond the limited support he enjoys in a country with a population of 110 million.

Finally, the claim in the article to remove and / or assassinate a prime minister of one hundred million people is outrageous in many ways. It is shameful how, at first, what is considered a renowned international magazine entertained such an idea. It amounts to condoning war crimes, not to mention that it constitutes an assault on the Ethiopian people and the Ethiopian government.

Ignoring the role of a journalist, or an analyst, whose loyalty must always depend on the facts, the nuances of the story, and a sober analysis that the facts and historical context bring, this analysis is an epitome of outspoken mercenarism.
