Foreign Ministers of Egypt and Bahrain discuss bilateral economic cooperation

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry hosted Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al-Zayani on Saturday to discuss measures to improve economic, investment and trade cooperation between the two countries.

Both ministers also addressed several regional issues of mutual interest, including the Libyan crisis, where they agreed on the need to preserve the ongoing ceasefire in the war-torn country and on the election of a new presidential council.

The two sides affirmed their support for a political solution that maintains Libya’s sovereignty and unity. They also discussed Libya’s needs to deal with terrorism and destructive foreign interference, according to a statement released by Egypt’s Foreign Ministry on Saturday.

During the discussions, both officials reviewed ways to intensify joint action aimed at improving stability in Egypt and Bahrain. This would occur with an emphasis on the solidarity of the two countries to confront foreign interventions aimed at undermining security and stability in the region.

In addition, Shoukry expressed Egypt’s appreciation for the Bahraini government’s care for the Egyptian community residing in the GCC country during the recent novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. He also reaffirmed Egypt’s support for Bahrain and the GCC region to combat any challenges and dangers that threaten its security and stability.

Later, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi met with Al-Zayani at the Itihadiya Palace in Cairo. During the meeting, Al-Zayani affirmed the interest of the two sides in developing and strengthening ties in various fields, Bahrain’s Foreign Ministry said.

Al-Sisi praised the distinguished relations between the two countries and peoples, and requested that the Bahraini minister convey his greetings to King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. Al-Sisi highlighted his wishes for the further development of Bahrain and its people.

Al-Zayani praised Egypt’s efforts to preserve Arab national security and advocate for causes in the region. He also affirmed Bahrain’s position of solidarity with Egypt in the measures that the latter takes to protect its national security and defend its sovereignty and interests.

He conveyed the greetings of the ruling monarch of Bahrain to President Al-Sisi, while highlighting the strategic role that Egypt plays in consolidating regional security and peace.
