CAIRO – November 27, 2020: As part of the consolidation of Egypt-Africa relations and the monitoring of regional developments, several assistants to the Minister of Foreign Affairs have toured the regions of the Horn of Africa and East Africa, including South Sudan, Djibouti and Kenya. according to a statement from Egypt’s Foreign Ministry on Friday.
The tour was announced a day after Ethiopia’s Minister of Water, Irrigation and Energy, Seleshi Bekele, declared that the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) will begin the first round of power generation in June 2021 amidst the rejection of the other countries downstream of the Nile [Egypt and Sudan].
The delegation includes Deputy Foreign Minister for African Affairs, Ambassador Sherif Issa, and Deputy Foreign Minister for Sudan and South Sudan Affairs, Ambassador Osama Shaltout, the statement added.
The Egyptian side stated that it is monitoring these developments and stressed the importance of preserving peace and stability in this region, noting in this regard Egypt’s enthusiasm for its stability and Egypt’s full support for all efforts aimed at reinforce peace and security in this region, which represents a pillar of regional and continental security, ”the statement read.
The meetings also addressed means to support and promote bilateral ties with these countries in various fields, in addition to monitoring bilateral cooperation programs.
The day after the tour, President Abdel Fattah El Sisi headed to South Sudan’s capital Juba to meet his counterpart Salva Kiir.
Presidential spokesman Ambassador Bassam Rady noted that Sisi’s first visit to South Sudan aims to discuss joint cooperation between the two countries and ways to strengthen bilateral relations, particularly at the economic and development levels.
Both leaders will also discuss key political developments in the region and Africa.
