We’re still a little over a month away from the official launch of the PlayStation 5, but we already have the first public teardown of the console’s hardware courtesy of Sony itself.
The Japanese video (with English subtitles) that Sony released on Wednesday morning answers quite a few lingering questions left over from previous announcements and recent practice time from the Japanese press.
Chief among them is a demonstration of how the system’s black circular bracket works. When the PS5 is placed vertically, the stand is held in place with a single large screw. When that screw is removed, it can be stored in a compartment in the base, and a small cap fills the screw hole in the system.
PS5 owners will use the same base when placing the PS5 horizontally, ostensibly to give a flat surface on which the smooth curves of the system rest. However, in this setup, the base just snaps into place along a set of markings on one of those white panels, no screws required.
Speaking of those white panels, the teardown video shows that they can be easily removed without tools. Just “lift the back corner and slide it out” as the video explains. With the white panels off, users have easy access to the exterior of the system’s cooling fan, which draws air from both sides of the system through two long side vents at the front and a rear vent that runs the entire length of the system. .
The inner case also has two holes for “dust collectors” that can be easily vacuumed, according to Sony. That should be good news for PS4 owners who have become used to opening the system and blasting it with compressed air to remove the dust clogging the system.
