Of the few genuinely healthy things that have captivated the world since January 2017, Fiona is among the best.
Born six weeks early on January 24, 2017, the little hippopotamus from the Cincinnati Zoo was a beacon of joy during a particularly dark time in American history. He has been with us ever since and is now celebrating four years of life.
Happy birthday, Fiona!
The zoo rang on Fiona’s last birthday the same way it does every two years: with cake, photos, videos, and a charity drive. That means there are all kinds of adorable means for you to gawk as you wish this very special hippo a very special day.

Fiona quickly became a national sensation when she was born, both because of her heartwarming history and the fact that baby hippos are truly adorable. Plus, 2017 was a stressful year for at least half the country and Fiona offered us a blessed escape.
U.S awwHe rejoiced when he reconnected with his parents six months after his birth. We applaud the friends he made with his utter grace. And we breathe sighs of relief when, just before her third birthday, Fiona finally tipped the scales at 1,000 pounds.
The weight milestone was especially important because, being a preterm delivery, there were questions about whether she would survive and what her long-term outlook was for living a quality, happy life. Maybe it was luck, or Fiona’s spirit, or just the collective intensity of our hope that one The good could survive 2017.
Whatever kept it going, we’re richer for it. Fiona is officially turning four years old as we all face the possibility of a better future ahead. The happiest birthday to you, sweet hippo.
