In this week’s top stories: Google Photos unveils a plan to discontinue its free tier, we get down to business with the OnePlus Nord N10 5G, the YouTube Premium promo offers the free Stadia Premiere Edition bundle, and more.
The biggest story this week is that Google Photos will no longer offer free unlimited “high quality” storage, with images and videos uploaded after June 1 counting towards the free 15GB of storage from your Google account or storage. extended Google One. Perhaps most notably, all current and past Pixel phones will retain their free Google Photos storage, but not future devices.
Google Photos has a new “custom estimate” of how long it might take to maximize storage that takes into account the frequency of backups. Next year, another utility within Photos will highlight dark or blurry photos and large videos that you may want to delete to save space.
This year, OnePlus has significantly shifted towards creating budget Android devices, the latest of which is the Nord N10 5G. Our team had a chance to test the Nord N10 5G and shared some thoughts this week on the debatable decisions OnePlus made to make this phone possible and its price, still unknown in the US.
On paper, the Nord N10 contributes a lot, but in practice I’m not sure it will measure up. The hardware, despite being plastic, is not bad at all. I think OnePlus also made a good decision with the very sensitive rear fingerprint sensor. The performance has some hiccups, but it does the job well. Cameras are one of the only areas for which there is no excuse, but I can confidently say that if camera is your priority, you should buy a Pixel 4a.
However, a much bigger criticism of the Nord N10, and indeed the entire OnePlus Nord line, came later in the week when OnePlus announced that its affordable devices would only receive a single major update for Android. That means phones like the still-unreleased Nord N10 will only be upgraded from last year’s Android 10 to this year’s Android 11.
Beyond the Android 11 update, OnePlus will live up to the bare minimum when it comes to security updates. They will receive two years of security updates, but there is no mention of how often those updates will arrive. I’d bet not very often.
Gamers have been thrilled this week, with the launch of the latest Xbox and PlayStation consoles for early adopters. Possibly hoping to capitalize on that wave of excitement, Google launched a promotion that allows YouTube Premium members in select countries to claim a free Stadia Premiere Edition bundle complete with a Chromecast Ultra and a Stadia controller.
Even if you’re not particularly interested in Stadia, I suggest you give it a try sometime though! – This promotion is worth claiming if you can. With the launch of the new Chromecast with Google TV, the only way to get a Chromecast Ultra is through Stadia Premiere Edition, and despite its original release in 2016, the Chromecast Ultra is still a solid device. Also, the Stadia controller is an excellent game controller, even if you don’t use it for Stadia.
Lastly, YouTube, YouTube TV, and Google TV, also known as Play Movies & TV, experienced a simultaneous outage this week that began in the late afternoon and lasted for nearly two hours. Interestingly, the Google Play Store also experienced issues with installing apps during the same window.
YouTube on all platforms [was] navigable, but users [were] I can’t play videos. Initially, the thumbnail image would appear on the mobile, but it would be accompanied by a continuous charging progress indicator. Later in the outage, an error message appeared. Looking for videos still [worked], but there is [was] a slight delay before everything [loaded].
