We all miss someone right now: a family member, a friend, a co-worker, a bandmate. Well, ask no more with the launch of Collab by Facebook for iOS.
The experimental app invites people to come together and create beautiful music, digitally. Open the program to view a source of collaborations, each with three independent 15-second videos, playing in sync.
Users can play a kind of symphonic Dr. Frankenstein, swiping each row to load a new clip, scrolling until they find the perfect mashup. Mix and match new songs using other people’s uploads, or record your own contribution, then share it online via the app or various social media platforms.
“Collab automates the complexity of video and audio synchronization so you can easily produce a final composition that you like,” wrote Brittany Mennuti, product leader, in a blog post. “With Collab, you feel like you’re playing with the band from the comfort of your room. The most important factor: no musical experience required; if you can slide, you can create a collaboration.”
Introduced in May as an invite-only beta, the iOS app brings creators and fans together in a way that most people have never experienced before. Plus, it makes blocking a lot more fun and social.

“I’ve never met the people I make music with, but it doesn’t matter,” said part-time singer and Collab user Marissa. “We’re clearly here to have fun and make music together, and that’s one of the most beautiful things we have in common.”
