Sony and Microsoft aren’t the only two companies releasing major new gaming hardware this holiday season. On Wednesday, Facebook revealed the Oculus Quest 2 virtual reality headset.
The new device, the successor to Facebook’s most successful virtual reality headsets, is more powerful than its predecessor and more affordable – the Quest 2 starts at just $ 300, which includes two wireless controllers and the headset itself.
Like the original Quest, the Quest 2 doesn’t require a PC to power virtual reality. It’s a bit like the virtual reality Nintendo Switch – you can play it offline, anywhere, as a standalone device, or you can plug it into a PC and play more visually stunning PC-powered VR games like “Half-Life: Alyx “that require more muscle processing.
So what’s different between the Quest 2 and the original?
It’s lighter, more powerful, and has a more capable screen. Most important of all, it’s less expensive than the first Quest model – the Quest 2 starts at $ 300 with 64GB of built-in storage, and the $ 400 model comes with 256GB.
The Quest 2 is also backward compatible with the first generation. If you already have a mission, your content will automatically be presented with you as part of your user account.
In particular, the Quest 2 is considered Facebook’s new flagship headset. With the release of Quest 2 in October, Facebook is canceling the Oculus “Rift” line of headphones in favor of the Quest line.
“We are going to focus on the advancement of standalone VR headsets,” reads a Facebook blog post. “We will no longer be looking for PC-only hardware, and Rift S sales will end in 2021.”
Pre-orders for the Oculus Quest 2 headsets are available starting today via the Oculus website, with the full launch scheduled for October 13. GameStop, Best Buy, Target and Walmart serve as retail partners for the launch.
