On September 25, Facebook announced that in a deal it reached with Apple, the company decided to temporarily halt cutting 30 percent of total revenue from paid events amid the coronavirus pandemic. This would help financially affected artists make money, as the social media platform could give some businesses a reprieve from paying a 30 percent commission. The deal removes Apple’s App Store commission for the social media giant for mobile apps that offer paid events online, Facebook said in a statement.
According to the UK stock market ADVFN report, Apple’s decision comes amid mounting criticism about its handling of digital market operations despite the coronavirus. The agreement, relevant for the rest of the year, will allow Facebook to use its direct transaction systems for live events that can be processed by application developers for in-app purchases through a third party. Apple had previously said in a statement that the 30 percent commission helped the company cover the cost of the store’s services, such as user privacy, and was similar to what other app markets charge. However, the recent exemption will promote Facebook’s live streaming services and businesses in financial distress can host paid events and presentations without having to pay the App Store fee.

Game-related streaming is excluded
In a statement, Facebook said that Apple, even though it initially refused to waive the store tax, has recently changed its mind. For several years, Facebook CEO Zuckerberg and Apple CEO Tim Cook have exchanged views and verbal attacks on privacy scandals and business models. According to a New York Times report, sources even confirmed that Zuckerberg urged Facebook users to switch to Android and stop using iPhones. However, Apple’s new exemption from the Facebook app tax has created a milestone as struggling businesses will now be able to download apps without the purchase fee until August 2021, but video game companies and other game-related streams they are excluded from the deal.
