WhatsApp is testing facial recognition as a secure unlocking method for Android, Somag News reports, for smartphones with native facial biometric capabilities.
By enrolling their facial biometrics with the application version 2.20.203.3, Android users can prevent other people from opening the application and viewing the messages it contains. The feature will be provided from the same menu that currently offers fingerprint protection.
The ‘Fingerprint Lock’ option will be replaced by a ‘Biometric Lock’ feature, according to the images shared by WABetaInfo. The change to ‘Biometric Lock’ also introduces the presentation of another unique identifier if the biometric attempt fails, the site says.
Biometric Authentication for App Lock and Unlock was launched on iOS in early 2019.
A schedule for the release of the feature has not been provided to general availability, but users who wish to enable the feature can now do so through the beta app available on the Play Store.
Android has increasingly emphasized facial recognition, adding non-alteration of facial appearance to preserve biometric functionality in camera APIs to the compatibility criteria released in September.
