The Formula 1 transfer market for 2021 appears to be poised to take two more significant laps following Sebastian Vettel’s plans to part ways with Ferrari.
Carlos Sainz is understood to be in advanced negotiations with Ferrari to replace Vettel, while McLaren has made Daniel Ricciardo his primary target to take Spanish place if that first change continues.
So would Sainz make sense as Charles Leclerc’s teammate at Ferrari starting next year, and Ricciardo as McLaren’s new and experienced figurehead? The Sky F1 team gave their opinion on the possible movements of the driver market in the latest Vodcast …
Sainz to Ferrari: Is it suitable to replace Vettel?
David Croft: “He is a very mature driver, very accomplished and very competent. If you want to go for someone who will be there to win races if Leclerc has a bad day, then Sainz is that man. He will win multiple races because he is talented enough to do it.
“It suits that Ferrari mold more than Daniel Ricciardo, who is a little more free-spirited.”
Martin Brundle: “Sainz is a fighter and I have defended him for a long time. I felt like a lone voice in the paddock, just like I did with Nico Rosberg a long time ago. He has the winning mentality of his old man. He is an athlete and I like the way in which he deals with his business.
“It won’t be a pusher for Leclerc and Ferrari wouldn’t want it to be either. I just think that sounds like a better combo going forward than trying to match Hamilton and Leclerc. I see Sainz as a good candidate for the media.” finished.”

Ricciardo to McLaren: Does it make sense?
Brundle: “Daniel parked at Renault [since 2019] and I don’t think he was really happy there. It has not fitted. I don’t think it’s what he wanted, he took a bit of criticism, and I think it would be perfect for Ferrari, too. I am sure you have considered all options.
“But, likewise, a McLaren with a Mercedes engine for 2021 will make him feel loved there, make him feel important, and he still has it. He has the speed, he has the race car, he is very experienced.
“Ricciardo will be an asset to any team in Formula 1, any team.”
