F1: Stroll’s pole ‘was not luck, it was well judged’

Lance Stroll’s first pole position in Formula 1 came due to his “well-judged” decision to switch to intermediate tires, said his team principal Otmar Szafnauer.

The Racing Point driver has endured a tough series of races. He has not scored in the past five rounds, one of which he missed after testing positive for Covid-19.

After that tough period, his first F1 pole position was “well deserved,” Szafnauer said.

“You can say that he has had bad luck in the middle of this year, but I don’t think it was luck, I think he was well judged.

“He came in and said right away, towards the end of Q3, ‘They will be intermediate.’ He said it right at the beginning of Q3, he said ‘it’s not quite there yet, but it will be at the end’. But he came in, he put on the intermissions, he was absolutely right. And he got the tire to work and he deserved pole position ”.

Sergio Pérez held the provisional pole position, but fell to third after being stopped by Antonio Giovinazzi on his last fastest lap.

“We were hoping to be good but I [don’t] I think we expected pole and third, ”said Szafnauer.

“They were all very composed. Lance above all, very calm, he communicated well with the pit wall, he told us about the conditions. Very well.

“I think Sergio didn’t get the last lap, Lance did. [He was] a little disappointed, Max [Verstappen] and Lance got one more lap if I remember correctly. “

“They both did a fantastic job,” he added. “The conditions were the most difficult I have ever seen. A brand new, freshly re-paved track that is pretty slick without even water, then add water and cool temperatures too. It was like driving on ice and they both did a great job. “
