It appears that Apple’s iPhone 12 range will break sales records, despite a growing list of launch problems. But now, a new iPhone-exclusive leak reveals that the design change everyone wants is coming next year.

DigiTimes turns heads, reporting that Apple will finally be able to reduce the notch size on the iPhone 13, while simultaneously updating the front and rear cameras with Pro-level enhancements across the range.
According to the report, two advancements are key for the smaller notch. The first is that Apple has managed to significantly reduce the sensors that make up Face ID. The second is an optimized VCSEL chip in the front camera, which reduces volume and adds enhanced depth-sensing capabilities, a plus for portrait mode selfies.

Moving on to the back of the iPhone 13, DigiTimes also claims that Apple is working with the US-based II-VI to make VCSEL chips for time-of-flight (ToF) LiDAR scanners with all four iPhone 13 models getting this. previously only for Pro feature next year. Presumably, the space Apple has saved internally from its front-facing camera and Face ID changes is what allows the iPhone 13 Mini to take this step and take the iPhone 13 (which matches its functionality) on the road.
It’s worth noting that Digitimes has a mixed track record, but has also broken a few major exclusives in recent months.
Also, if Digitimes is correct with its latest report, the iPhone 13 case is already compelling. Industry leaks have revealed next-gen 5G efficiency (which should have a major effect on battery life), mirrored storage, LPTO panels (which allow for 120Hz ProMotion displays), the return of Touch ID alongside with Face ID (for an era of masks) and what has been labeled the biggest WiFi upgrade in 20 years.
But, for many, it’s the smallest notch that could be the icing on the cake.
