Nespresso today commits that each cup of Nespresso Coffee, for both home and professional customers, will be carbon neutral by 2022. This new ambition is based on more than 10 years of work during which Nespresso it has reduced its carbon emissions and offset the rest through agroforestry.
?? Climate change is a reality and our future depends on going further and faster in our sustainability commitments. That is why we are accelerating our commitments to offer our consumers a way to drink a carbon neutral cup of coffee by 2022. A coffee, made with the finest and rarest beans, of sustainable origin. I truly believe that both our business and the coffee industry can be a force for good in the world by tackling this urgent issue. said Guillaume Le Cunff, CEO of Nespresso.
Having already achieved carbon neutrality in its business operations (scopes 1 and 2) since 2017, the company’s new commitment will address the emissions that occur in its supply chain and product life cycle (scope 3).
Nespresso achieve carbon neutrality through the following initiatives: reducing carbon emissions; tree planting in and around coffee farms where Nespresso gets his coffee (inset); and through support and investment in high-quality offset projects.
one. Carbon emission reduction: A crucial element of Nespresso ?? s The vision is to decarbonize your value chain. These immediate initiatives include:
- Sustainable energy use within Nespresso operations: Promote 100% renewable energy in all Nespresso boutiques and increase the use of biogas in the manufacturing process.
- Expanded circularity of Nespresso products and packaging: increased use of recycled plastic in Nespresso machines, as well as recycled virgin aluminum with low carbon content in coffee capsules.
two. Tree planting in coffee plantations and surrounding landscapes (box): Trees are the best way to capture carbon from the atmosphere while investing in nature and building a regenerative agricultural system. Planting trees provides the necessary shade to improve the quality and quantity of a coffee crop. The roots also help protect against soil erosion and landslides and promote soil regeneration. With its partner Pur Projet, Nespresso will triple tree planting capacity (with insert) in coffee producing countries such as Colombia, Guatemala, Ethiopia and Costa Rica.
3. Accelerate to generate immediate positive impact (compensation initiatives): Nespresso It will also invest in projects to support forest conservation and restoration, as well as to implement clean energy solutions within agricultural communities.
This carbon neutral commitment is part of a broader sustainability ambition to be communicated later this year: to preserve exceptional coffees, build a resilient and regenerative coffee farming system, drive sustainable livelihoods for farmers and build a circular business. .
QUOTES FROM OUR PARTNERS:
The 2022 Carbon Neutral Roadmap has been endorsed by Nespresso Members of the Sustainability Advisory Council (NSAB).
GEORGE CLOONEY, NESPRESSO BRAND AMBASSADOR
“Climate change is happening now, which means that we must all take responsibility and act quickly.” said George Clooney, actor, Nespresso Global Brand Ambassador and member of the Nespresso Sustainability Advisory Council. ??It is clear that Nespresso he understands this urgency and is putting our planet and people front and center in the decisions he makes. These ambitions and vision are based on a commitment to sustainability that I have been privileged to have been involved in for the past seven years. I’ve seen how far we’ve come in that time, and I’m excited to see how good Nespresso can deliver in the next 10 years. ??
TRISTAN LECOMTE, CO-FOUNDER, PUR PROJECT
?? There is pressure for all companies to reduce their carbon footprint and Nespresso is clearly showing a strong will to tackle its own carbon emissions through this ambitious and qualitative carbon neutral program. While we are all looking for technical innovations that reduce carbon, it is urgent that companies also invest in sequestration of their emissions to balance their books as quickly as possible, ?? said Tristan Lecomte, founder, Pur Projet, member of the Nespresso Sustainability Advisory Council. ?? We are proud to support Nespresso in doing this, planting millions of trees around the world in the coffee regions of Colombia, Guatemala and Ethiopia to remove carbon dioxide from the air since 2014. We will continue to work together and triple the capacity of the incorporation program of carbon and regeneration of the ecosystems on which we all depend.
