Weeks after the communications blackout in the Tigray region due to the war against TPLF, EthioTelecom is now acting to restore full service to the region.

Firehiwot Tamiru, chief executive officer, said Thursday that work is underway to resume full service in the region.

It has been reported in recent weeks that the TPLF employed the scorched earth policy when it became clear that it was losing the war. Infrastructure, including telephone lines, were destroyed.

“Due to the problem in the northern region, the alternative lines of the main stations in Mekelle and Shire were disconnected, and the commercial line was also disconnected,” he said, according to the state media Fana Broadcasting Corporation (FBC).

There is a complaint that a video, a copy of which is in the hands of the federal police for investigative purposes, was captured when forces, allegedly TPLF forces, damaged main stations.

According to the CEO, a partial telephone service is started in areas such as Shiraro, Maitsebri, Dansha, Turkan, Maikadra and Korem.

It is also pointed out that the deployment of technicians has been made difficult due to the security situations in the region.

However, EthioTelecom appears to be optimistic that the entire region will regain services.

Residents of one county who spoke to the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation said they have faced serious challenges due to a communications blackout. They also said that they did not have access to banking services. They demanded that the government address these problems.

The government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has assigned a transitional administration until the next general election. Cities like Shire have appointed a mayor, according to an EBC report.

Meanwhile, the government says it has started sending humanitarian aid to different parts of the Tigray region. FBC cited Dr. Abraham Belay, a senior official from the Tigray Region Prosperity Party, to report that 44 trucks of food aid arrived in the city of Shire on Wednesday. Another 30 trucks arrived in Mekelle on Thursday.
