October 6, 2020, 12:15 AMAddis Ababa, Oct 6 (Prensa Latina) Ethiopia’s Minister of Water, Irrigation and Energy, Seleshi Bekele, said that the Great Renaissance Dam of Ethiopia (GERD) saved Sudan from worse flood damage during the rainy season.

If it had not been for the progress made in the GERD and the completion of the first filling stage, the disaster in Sudan would have been worse, Bekele wrote on his Twitter account.

The dam on the Blue Nile, he stressed, will not only be an important source of energy generation for our nation, but will also increase the capacity of other countries in the region.

In addition to promoting the development of renewable energy and ensuring other benefits for the lives of millions of people, it will help optimize water management and storage during periods of drought and floods, Bekele added.

Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt are holding negotiations on how to operate the dam, but after several years of meetings, technical reports, declarations of interests and the efforts of various mediators, they have not reached an agreement.
