Balderas for Genuine Democracy has called, in its press release today, for the establishment of a “provisional government of technocrats” at the end of the current term in October.
Following the government’s decision not to hold elections before the end of its current term and its announcement of four alternatives aimed at extending its term last week, many opposition parties question the legality of the government’s proposal and instead propose that start a political agreement. to carry out a successful transition to a democratic election.
But many have been criticizing such a solution, arguing that the political divide between political parties does not allow for smooth political negotiation and, consequently, could lead to further political unrest and conflict rather than a transition to democracy. The Prime Minister had also spoken strongly against such a proposal in his meeting with the leaders of political parties on the subject.
Balderas has also criticized both proposals. He has considered the government’s attempt to extend its mandate and the four proposed alternatives to make that possible “not only incapable of saving the country from the dangers it faces, but also without any legal basis.” He has also criticized the government for excluding major opposition parties “including Balderas” from discussion on the issue last week.
He has also called for the second solution proposed by many opposition parties of establishing a transitional government through political negotiation “an alternative presented by those who want to disintegrate the country.”
In the press release, the party stated that its proposed solution overcomes the objections raised against the government’s attempt to extend its current mandate and a transitional government that will be formed by political negotiation. According to Mr. Eskinder Negga, party president, the ‘technocracy’ alternative was chosen because it could maintain the unity, peace and security of the country, it can remain free of affiliations with political parties and ideologies, and because there are other instances internationally Known where it was used to achieve successful transitions, such as the technocratic government of Italy before the one now in power.
Said government would be made up of intellectuals and experts at the proposal of political and civic organizations with the international community observing the process. Experts must have no past affiliation with any political organization. This government would take control of the government of the party that is currently in power and administer it for two years. Its mandate would be limited to maintaining the country’s sovereignty and internal peace and security, building institutions that are necessary for free and fair elections, executing the daily tasks of the government, and arranging for a peace convention between political parties and citizens.
