September 26, 2020 (Ezega.com) – Ethiopian security authorities have warned of possible tough measures against any attempted violence that may arise in defiance of the power of the federal government after October 5, 2020.
The warnings come after authorities in the Tigray region said once again that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government will not be legitimate after his term ends on October 5, 2020.
Ethiopia Defense Force Deputy Chief of Staff Berhanu Jula said that any attempt at violence will be met harshly and that the defense forces are ready to take action against any entity that tries to control power by force.
“We will be forced to take action against any entity that violates the constitution,” the deputy chief of staff and head of operational affairs, General Berhanu, told the Ethiopian state news agency.
He warned that those forces that claim there will be no elected government after October 5 must be careful not to violate the constitution. “The defense force will not tolerate any movement designed to violate the constitution.
It is unclear if Berhanu Jula was responding to comments from Getachew Reda, an executive member of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), who allegedly suggested that the defense forces were ready to control the power of the federal government after 5 May. October 2020.
TPLF, the ruling party of the Tigray region, accused the federal government of postponing the August general elections unilaterally and in violation of the constitution and claimed that the federal government would not be legitimate to rule the nation after October 5.
TPLF leaders have rejected parliament’s decision this week to hold six general elections across the country, including the Tigray region, during this Ethiopian year.
If the regional state of Tigray does not allow that to happen in the region, the federal government is likely to act, according to Ethiopian officials. However, General Berhanu Jula’s interview lacked specificity in this regard.
“There would be neither an interim nor a transitional government. The power of the government can only be secured through elections based on the constitution, ”added Berhanu.
Likewise, the Federal Police Commission also announced its willingness to take rigorous action against the forces causing disturbances in any part of the country.
“The police will not tolerate any force attempting to instigate violence in the belief that there will be no legitimate government after October 5, 2020 Endeshaw Tassew, the Federal Police Commissioner said in a briefing on Friday.
“There are forces that are conspiring to create chaos during the ‘Finding True Cross’ and ‘Ireecha’ celebrations in Addis Ababa this and the coming weekends,” he added.
He said searches are being conducted at all entry points to Addis Ababa and in the surrounding cities of Oromia to prevent possible attacks.
