Despite numerous foreign attacks and incursions, Ethiopia has been defending and safeguarding its sovereignty. Ethiopia is also a country that defeated the colonial aggressor and has remained a former independent state.

Indeed, many African countries and others have seen Ethiopia as an icon of independence. Some African countries have also been using Ethiopia’s tricolor flag having changed only the design of their flags.

No one denies the fact that Ethiopia had humiliated the colonizers in the Battle of Adwa, therefore, the victory of Adwa had taught a great lesson to those who tried to violate the sovereignty of Ethiopia. Furthermore, he has vividly testified over and over again that Ethiopians never hand over their sovereignty to any power.

Knowingly or unknowingly, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, has hit the drum of war hard very recently, urging Egypt downstream to resort to destruction in a telephone conversation that many international organizations and famous personalities categorically denounced. .

Such a belligerent threat to the dam is tantamount to declaring war on a sovereign country that has been working closely with downstream countries to ensure fair, equitable and just use of the waters of the Nile.

Yes, Ethiopia and the United States of America have exemplary and long-standing diplomatic ties. For more than a hundred years, the two countries have managed to consolidate their historic relations in the economic, social and political spheres.

Currently, they are strategic partners and allies in the fight against terrorism that represents a serious threat to the entire world.

The United States of America has also participated as observers in the GERD talks led by the African Union (AU). But, Present Trump’s reckless comment has cast doubt on the ongoing AU-led trilateral negotiation on GERD. Therefore, the United States has to reconsider its position on the GERD and has to unreservedly support Ethiopia’s inviolable development rights by using its natural resources without harming downstream countries.

In general, Ethiopia strongly believes in resolving any conflict at the negotiating table, but everyone should know at the same time that Ethiopia’s sovereignty is non-negotiable.
