Ethiopia’s Foreign Ministry announced Monday that it has finalized preparations to repatriate 1,440 Ethiopian migrants from Saudi Arabia.
Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporate (EBC) quoted the ministry’s director of consular affairs, Mesfin Gebremariam, as saying that the migrants will return home between September 14, 2020 and October 6, 2020.
300 of them will arrive in Addis Ababa next Wednesday, and another 132 migrants will arrive home on Thursday, according to the ministry.
Ethiopian migrants returning home are those who reportedly entered Saudi Arabia illegally via the Red Sea route and had been in prison and in illegal migrant detention centers.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM), the government of Saudi Arabia, the Ethiopian Embassy in Saudi Arabia and the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs worked together to return the migrants home, EBC reported.
In addition, 132 Ethiopians affected by the explosion in Beirut (Lebanon) are also expected to arrive home this Thursday.
Last week, some 147 Ethiopians returned home from the country.
