The Ethiopian Ministry of Health today recommended to the government to cautiously conduct the general elections, which were postponed a few months ago due to the breakdown of the pandemic: the coronavirus.

Taking the necessary additional precautions to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), the country can now begin preparations to hold the fifth round of its general general elections, according to Health Minister Dr. Liya Tadesse. She made the recommendation to members of parliament at the Extraordinary Assembly of the Ethiopian Parliament this morning.

The Ministry’s recommendations are referred to Parliament’s standing committee on legal and justice affairs for further examination. In her report, the minister stated that although the number of new coronavirus infections in Ethiopia is not decreasing, the country has managed to develop its testing capacity and has managed to set up many treatment centers across the country.

Since the first case was reported in Ethiopia last April, more than 66,200 people have been infected with the virus. 1,045 of them have lost their lives. So far, around 1,166,000 people in Ethiopia have undergone laboratory tests for coronavirus, according to the Ministry’s daily COVID-19 report.
