Ethiopia receives 300,000 doses of virus vaccine from China

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia

China on Tuesday donated 300,000 doses of the coronavirus vaccine developed by Sinopharm to Ethiopia.

“Vaccines with help from China will surely help protect the lives and health of many Ethiopians from the ravages of the pandemic,” said the Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia, Zhao Zhiyuan, on the occasion of the delivery of the vaccine doses in Ethiopian Airlines cargo terminal. .

“We will never forget that, on this occasion last year, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed reaffirmed Ethiopia’s support for China’s fight against COVID-19 through a phone call and letters of condolence to President Xi Jinping,” he said.

He noted that China has donated and is donating vaccines to 80 urgently needed developing countries, and has provided support under the COVAX global vaccine exchange scheme.

In Ethiopia, a total of 202,545 COVID-19 cases have been reported, including 2,825 deaths and 155,190 recoveries.

On Monday, Ethiopia launched stricter social measures under which anyone who comes out without a mask or groups making physical contact will face arrest, three years in jail and fines.

Upon receiving the vaccines, Ethiopia’s Health Minister Lia Tadesse recalled that China had also donated COVID-19 medical equipment.

Ethiopia plans to vaccinate 20% of its population of 110 million by the end of 2021.
