Ethiopia may now be in a position to hold parliamentary elections after taking precautionary measures against COVID-19, the Health Minister said on Friday.

Lia Kebede said in an emergency session of the House of People’s Representatives that the country could now hold parliamentary elections provided all necessary precautions are taken against the spread of the coronavirus.

Ethiopia, a landlocked country in the Horn of Africa, has twice postponed its sixth parliamentary election due to internal conflicts and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last week, in clear defiance of federal authority, the regional state of Tigray, in northern Ethiopia, held a regional election that was categorically rejected by both the Ethiopian National Electoral Board (NEBE) and the House of Elections. the Federation, the upper house of parliament.

The minister said the nation developed preventive capabilities to mitigate circumstances that could lead to the spread of the virus, Lia said, citing local broadcaster FANA.

The country’s testing capacity, he said, increased as the ministry managed to perform more than 11.7 million laboratory tests, detecting 66,224 cases and recording 1,045 deaths.
