Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed of Ethiopia this morning inaugurated a new tourist attraction developed on Entoto Mountain in the capital Addis Ababa.
Developed on Entoto Mountain, Entoto Park is developed through the collaboration of the private sector with the government. It is part of the initiative launched by Prime Minister Abity a year ago as the “Gebeta Lesheger” project, which envisaged cleaning and converting river streams and undeveloped areas in Addis Ababa into clean tourist attraction sites.
The Entoto Park opened today is a densely wooded area considered the lung of Addis Ababa. Many of Ethiopia’s legendary long distance runners have been using the Entoto forest for training.
Different recreational businesses such as cafes, restaurants, parks, sports and spas are open today for both foreign and national visitors. Top Ethiopian coffee brands such as Kaldis, Tomoca, and one of Ethiopia’s pioneering resorts, Kuriftu, are among the businesses open today in Entoto Park.
Some 400 women who used to earn a living collecting firewood in the forest have received training from BGI Ethiopia and Coca Cola to be able to provide inputs for the restaurants and cafes in Entoto Park. In his remarks this morning, Prime Minister Abiy expressed his gratitude to all the companies and key individuals who contributed to the realization of the world-class Entoto Park.
To replicate the success of Gebeta Lesheger, Prime Minister Abiy recently launched a national project, “Gebeta Lehager”, which aims to develop three important natural resources (Lake Wenchi, Gorgora and Koisha sites) as major tourist attraction sites. .
