The Government of Ethiopia today issues an arrest warrant for dozens of high-ranking army officers, including former army chief of staff and businessman General Tsadkan Gebretensae.

Before General Samora Muhammad Yunis took office some two decades ago, General Tsadkan Gebretensae has served as Ethiopian Army Chief of Staff for eleven years starting in 1991. After leaving the army, General Tsadkan has become on one of Ethiopia’s tycoons making millions of dollars as one. from the main founders of Raya Brewery, which was sold to BGI Ethiopia for 2.5 billion birr a few years ago.

In March 2020, General Tsadkan Gebretensae became chairman of the board of Lion International Bank, one of Ethiopia’s sixteen private banks.
Some of the 40 army officers now wanted by the federal police have served in the Ethiopian air force and other military positions, while some of them have recently defected, according to the federal police report.

The 40 army officers are accused of collaborating with the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which admitted to attacking the northern command of the Ethiopian army in the Tigray region last month. Since then, the Ethiopian army has been fighting with the TPLF militia and those who deserted the army killed their collogues in the northern command by conspiring with the TPLF.

In the first three weeks of the offensive, the Ethiopian army has succeeded in liberating all the towns and villages in the Tigray region, including the capital, Mekele, from the TPLF militia. Since last week, federal police have been searching for TPLF leaders, who will face charges of treason, among others.
