The Ethiopian government has introduced new banknotes to replace the old ones, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said.
He made the statement on Sunday stating that all 5 Birr, 10 Birr, 50 Birr and 100 Birr bills will be replaced by new bills. He also indicated that the country will also introduce the 200 Birr note for the first time this year.
“Ethiopia today unveils new Birr banknotes for denominations of 10, 50 and 100, with the introduction of a new Birr 200 banknote. The new promissory notes will curb the financing of illegal activities; corruption and smuggling. The improved security features in the new banknotes will also stop producing counterfeits, ”Abiy posted on her Facebook.
To compact the rise in organized crime that followed the reform that brought Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to power in April 2018, which ended the nearly three-decade stronghold of the Tigray People’s Liberation (TPLF), many people have advised the Ethiopian government to change the Birr points.
