Addis Ababa – Plan International with its partners has launched PlayMatters; a new five-year initiative to educate more than 800,000 children in refugee camps and children from the host community in three East African countries.
The project aimed to provide apprenticeships for children ages three to twelve in refugee camps and children from host communities in Ethiopia, Uganda and Tanzania. It also aims to strengthen children’s resilience and develop their social, emotional, cognitive, physical and creative skills.
At the opening ceremony, Peter Sweetnam, Country Director for Plan International in Ethiopia, said yesterday that the initiative will provide quality education for all boys and equality for girls. The PlayMatters project is expected to benefit more than 800,000 children in refugee camps and children from the host community in three countries whose education and social development have been affected by displacement and trauma.
The initiative aimed to bring play-based learning to refugees and host community children between the ages of three and twelve living in refugee camps in three countries. Playful learning empowers children through playful learning that will foster their creativity, holistic development and well-being, he said.
According to the Country Director, the project will be implemented in five regions of Ethiopia in refugee camps such as Gambella, Somalia, Tigray, Benishangul-Gumz and Afar. The initiative will enhance positive, safe, and fun interactions between caregivers and children in a way that promotes their collective well-being.
The project is laying the groundwork to foster learning through play within existing learning structures and the teaching curriculum in schools and other learning centers, he said.
Dr. Geremew Huluqa, Minister of State of the Ministry of Education for his part said that since the government has been taking various measures such as a ten-year plan, curriculum review, teacher training modality and others, the initiative is important to support it and improve education . quality and equity.
“Much is needed to improve and develop the quality and equity of education. In this part, the contribution of the partners is a lot for holistic learning.”
