Ethiopia: Finance Minister Praises World Bank for Supporting Ethiopia’s Economic Reform

Finance Minister Ahmed Shide praised the World Bank for the support provided to Ethiopia’s economic reform programs and recognized the Bank’s contribution to combating the impacts of the COVID19 pandemic.

Ethiopia and the World Bank Group held a virtual meeting on Friday as part of the annual Spring Meetings where Ahmed Shide briefed participants on the main ongoing economic reform measures taken by the Ethiopian government so far.

The minister said that the Ethiopian government has taken tangible steps to implement structural reforms to transform and strengthen private sector participation in the economy.

He also explained about the actions taken to increase the flow of investments in the country.

While thanking the Bank for its support of the reform program, he explained the changes brought about by the new Investment Proclamation and other regulations that are helping to create a conducive business environment in Ethiopia.

In addition, the Minister explained about the comprehensive reforms of state companies that are helping to ensure that public companies improve their transparency, accountability, efficiency and quality in the provision of services.

The Minister recognized the World Bank’s contribution to combat the impacts of the COVID19 pandemic and requested more assistance to access more vaccines for Ethiopia.

The World Bank, represented by the Vice President for Eastern and Southern Africa, Hafez Ghanem and other sector directors expressed the Bank’s commitment to continue supporting Ethiopia’s economic reform programs.

They have also pledged to support Ethiopia in accessing more COVID vaccines, according to the Ministry of Finance.

In conclusion, the Minister briefed the meeting on the preparations for the recovery program to enable rapid reconstruction in Tigray.
