Ethiopia: death toll from COVID-19 exceeds 1,000

ADDIS ABABA, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) – Ethiopia’s Health Ministry revealed on Sunday that the number of COVID-19-related deaths in the country reached 1,013 after 17 more deaths were confirmed.

The ministry said total COVID-19 cases in Ethiopia reached 64,301, after 413 COVID-19 cases were reported on Sunday.

The ministry also said that some 24,983 patients who tested positive for COVID-19 had recovered, including 490 in the past 24 hours.

According to the ministry, a total of 38,303 COVID-19 patients are still in medical treatment, including 342 in serious condition.

Ethiopia, the second most populous nation in Africa with approximately 107 million people, has the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the East African region.

Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, is currently the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic, accounting for more than 50 percent of all confirmed COVID-19 cases, according to the ministry.

Ethiopia confirmed its first case of COVID-19 on March 13.
