Humanitarian assistance in the state of Tigray has started in the areas that were under the control of the federal government with the dispatch of teams from the National Commission for Disaster Risk Management to assess the situation of displaced people in different parts of the country.
According to the statement from the Prime Minister’s Office published yesterday on its official social media accounts, the government in collaboration with humanitarian agencies has begun to meet the basic needs of those in need and has begun to distribute initial supplies of food, medicine, water and not food.
“Following the assessment by the technical committee over the past few weeks, humanitarian support for the Ethiopian internally displaced in Tigray is being extended through the coordination of the Ministry of Peace and other federal stakeholders,” the report says.
Regarding the report, “the technical committee is also overseeing the establishment of four compensation sites to receive and distribute humanitarian aid for citizens.” In addition, the federal government is committed to responding to the needs of the citizens of the Tigray region, he said.
Furthermore, the government will continue its efforts to extend humanitarian assistance by cooperating with relevant agencies after supporting all victims and returning displaced Ethiopians to their homes, it was reported.
The government also shows its willingness to work with UN agencies and other humanitarian agencies on ways to protect civilians and help those in need, The Ethiopian Herald learned.
In an exclusive interview with The Ethiopian Herald, Debebe Zewudu, Director of Public Relations for the National Commission for Disaster Risk Management, said that humanitarian assistance for internally displaced citizens is currently distributed in areas liberated by the defense forces.

“We have already sent two teams to the west and north of the country to assess the conditions of the internally displaced.”
As for him, the commission has adequate local capacity to provide humanitarian aid to displaced people; therefore, the current situation in Tigray can be easily managed despite the fact that the actual number of victims is not yet known.
Procedures for the delivery of food and non-food items have begun and steps will continue to be taken with the coordination of humanitarian agencies, he said.
The commission is working in cooperation with the National Committee, which is structured under the Ministry of Peace to address initial aid and rehabilitate displaced citizens.
In addition, he noted that the Commission is ready to help citizens fleeing to Sudan, and that the task force related to this is being prepared in collaboration with the Ethiopian Embassy in Sudan and other government institutions.
The commission is identifying potential corridors to reach those in need of assistance in places that are still under the control of the TPLF board, he added.
