DEBRE MARKOS – Amhara State’s Anadad Woreda East Gojjam Zone Agriculture Office announced that it plans to harvest more than 1.6 million quintals of crop this year.

The head of the Anadad Office of Agriculture Woreda Mekuanint Tadele told The Ethiopian Herald that the area has a high potential for teff production and that the office will harvest 1.6 million quintals of crops this year alone.

The Bureau said it is working with the Debre Markos Research Institute and Debre Markos University to boost productivity, as the region is well known for teff production. The weed swarm is greatly affecting crop productivity and the office is working to control and completely prevent weeds from the farm with the goal of increasing productivity.

Since recent years, cluster agriculture development programs have helped smallholders increase the productivity of teff, wheat, barley and other types of food crops, as well as boosting food security.

Ethiopia’s labor-intensive subsistence agriculture, along with the rainfed farming system, remained unproductive for centuries, necessitating transforming the archaic approach into a modern one.

He said that farmers harvest 27 quintals of teff per hectare and by weeds it is reduced to 22 quintals. To fight weeds and increase the productivity of all crops, including teff and wheat, the office works in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, he says.

Consequently, CHEM TEX Ethiopia, a provider of crop protection technology, has contributed various weed control teams. The company is providing equipment that would help boost productivity and fight weeds, the spread of desert locust swarms across the country.
