Ethiopia’s telecoms regulator Ethiopia’s Communications Authority has said it will enter into a consultation period with licensees as it seeks to finalize rules that will eventually govern liberalization of the country’s telecoms sector.

The Ethiopian government will issue two new licenses for mobile network operators in the country, while simultaneously selling an as-yet unspecified stake in state-owned telco Ethio Telecom.

The consultation phase will last 14 days and will end on the 11th.th May, according to a report by the international news agency, Bloomberg.

Opening Ethiopia’s telecommunications market is an attractive prospect for telecommunications companies around the world seeking to establish themselves in the second most populous nation in Africa and in the broader region of East Africa. Vodacom Group, MTN Group Ltd, Orange SA and Helios Towers have expressed their interest in acquiring a license in the country.

The Ethiopian government has confirmed that licenses issued to international telecommunications companies will be valid for a period of 15 years.

The licensing process is expected to be completed in the coming months, however, the worldwide Covid 19 pandemic has delayed the process.
