Adherence to the principles of non-intervention in internal affairs is one of the cardinal principles of the United Nations in determining the sovereignty of states.
Since Ethiopia is committed to abiding by international principles of non-intervention in the internal affairs of countries, international bodies must continue to give due respect to Ethiopia to handle affairs at home in accordance with universal norms, laws and conventions.
Ethiopia is a country with a long and proud history of being an early member of the League of Nations and a founding member of the United Nations. He is also one of the architects of the Organization of African Unity.
It was due to these facts that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed reaffirmed a firm stance to all interested entities to continue and conclude the ongoing police operation in accordance with the law of the country and without compromising the international obligations that it has already adopted.
Every sovereign nation has been charged with safeguarding the peace and tranquility of that nation. And Ethiopia is no exception in this regard. The reformist administration has rolled up its sleeves since the beginning of the reform to lay the foundations of democracy and prosperity and has achieved several achievements. However, successes on various fronts have not been without challenges.
Counter-Reform entities that are reinforced by the TPLF junta have been erecting barricades along the way. But the government has shown great patience waiting for these elements to come to their senses, also to keep the democratic space wide. But the destructive elements have greatly expanded their networks and have come to work to disunite the country. Their deadly conspiracies claimed many innocent lives and destroyed public and private property. When the red line is crossed, the people demanded that the government guarantee the rule of law, the minimum task that a government must fulfill.
Rule of law enforcement activities have become high on the reformist administration’s agenda. And the ongoing operation is no exception. But if there is any singular aspect about it, it is because the government is dismantling the core of the destructive elements, period.
Therefore, the international community must continue to support the interests of the Ethiopian people, understanding that, as a sovereign state, they are capable of managing their internal affairs.
It is clear to the international community that in what the Junta described as a “lightning preventive attack”, on November 4, 2020, it has committed a serious crime against the members of the Northern Command of the country’s National Defense Forces, indicated in the Tigray state. Over time, the federal government has been drawn into the rule of law enforcement operation.
This atrocity perpetrated by the junta in order to ensure its lost tight grip on the unconstitutional means of power was not limited to attacking the defense, but also claimed the lives of innocent civilians who have been brutally massacred in the city of Mai Kadra.
Therefore, trying to intervene in the internal affairs of Ethiopia, where organized crime reaches this vigor, is seen as giving asylum and legal basis to criminals who even publicly admit their crimes.
