Ethiopia: a city of contrasts that demands responsible citizenship

Born to Emperor Minilik II and Empress Taytu Bitul on the side of Entoto Mountain in 1889, Addis Ababa (New Flower, in the local Amharic language), has long been the capital of Ethiopia.

In due course of the trekking life’s journey since then, the city has maintained a series of social, economic, cultural, bilateral and multilateral relations with counterparts and political scenarios that keep intact the interests of the respective actors of the regime. In life, the city has been the scene of a multitude of fascinating and disturbing circumstances.

It has continued to host various embassies, international organizations, trade unions, liaison councils and offices, commissions and the like.

As this piece is not enough to score Addis Ababa from the inside out from its inception, it is forced to restrict itself to simultaneously represent only the paradoxical faces of the capital: neatness and waste.

With this walk in mind, this writer recently approached an environmental expert, Abdissa Tufa, who is a graduate of Dilla University in Sanitary and Environmental Sciences.

Abdissa addressed a number of city-related topics focused on environmental hygiene and waste disposal that take place in the capital.

“The name given to the city, Addis Ababa, does not show its characteristics or its physical appearance for a long time. It is time to make the city a standardized, orderly and attractive city,” he said.

Undeniably, the capital can now be seen as a city of contrasts, portraying sordid and seductive scenes. Yes, there are places here and there, although limited in number, that can potentially attract residents and visitors. There are very fascinating hotels and resorts that add value to the beauty of the capital.

Interestingly, the newly emerged projects in the city, Unity and Entoto parks, for example, which are the offspring of the patriotic prime minister’s brain, have given Addis Ababa a momentous and impressive appearance. Hopefully, these beautification advances will be instrumental in boosting the state of the capital and taking it to a new level of achievement.

According to Abdissa, what we have gleaned from the prime minister’s activities shows that “if one is committed, responsible and patriotic, building or making a significant difference is within everyone’s reach.”

Possessing all these catchy and enticing expanses that combine ancient heritages and newly emerged beautification centers, Addis Ababa is home to dirty, disgusting and inconsequential places, especially along the boulevards and around bustling and bustling places.

Dirty materials thrown away by reckless and irresponsible individuals push the city to enjoy a zero-sum game. In simple terms, the striking scenes found in very restricted places in the capital can be overshadowed and have equal weight by adding zero.

“Surprisingly, some people unknowingly or calculatingly dump the trash that leaves their house nearby at night and even during the day, assuming that simply cleaning their home can create an orderly environment,” he added Abdissa.

Answering the question of how public awareness can be raised with a view to developing civility and a sense of belonging among the community to make the physical appearance of capital compatible with its high-level position and purpose, Abdissa said that promoting the Environmental hygiene is not a one-handed effort. each and every citizen must be well informed in the way they can understand.

Throwing away rubbish and rubbish at random is, whether dry or liquid, highly disconcerting and severely damages the social well-being of society, in addition to deforming the beauty of the city.

Abdissa further clarified that the society is kind enough, understanding and cooperative as attested in several respects. It is true that everything that is done among society could never be out of their sight. If this is so, leveling the playing field for society to discuss the issue at their respective Idirs, Equbs, and other social gatherings can be an incomparable outlet. Therefore, the municipality in particular and the government in general have to act in unison to create a city of which all citizens can be proud.

He said: “The misperception of some segments of urbanites can be corrected and made aware of the negative repercussions of recklessly littering in three possible ways. First and foremost, the aforementioned social groups have to formulate a rule and a regulation that everyone in his residence seriously abides by followed by some form of fine, even to the extent that the culprits would be jailed, since thoughtlessly dumping nasty and smelly garbage is tantamount to genocide. As the saying goes, “Millions of miles they start over a period of time “The cumulative effect of the neatness of each home affects the entire city and the nation in general.
