General Mohammed Tessema reaffirms the position that it is the Defense Force of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia that is enforcing the rule of law in the Tigray region, not the Eritrean troops. He criticized the media for not adequately covering human rights violations perpetrated by TPLF forces.

There have been reports of human rights violations in Ethiopia’s Tigray region, including the violation that human rights organizations such as Amnesty International and the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission tend to link to Eritrean troops.

The Ethiopian Defense Force rejects the accusation. Major General Mohammed Tessema, who is chief of indoctrination within the Ethiopian Defense Forces, had an interview, which was published on Monday, with Voice of America’s Amharic service Tsion Girma.

He was asked what the Ethiopian defense force (and the Ethiopian government) says about the claim that Eritrean troops entered Ethiopian territory and participated in extensive human rights violations.

“Before taking control of the city of Mekelle, we have revealed the preparations by the Board [a reference to Tigray People’s Liberation Front] commit genocide in the Mekelle area. They prepared Eritrean soldiers’ uniforms for that purpose, ”General Mohammed said during the interview.

He added that the Ethiopian Defense Force had been on a law enforcement campaign in the region against a treacherous situation that endangered Ethiopia’s sovereignty, and that the ENDF did considerable work in distinguishing the junta forces. of the rest of the population of the region.

Despite the gruesome nature of the unsuspecting attack on the Ethiopia Defense Force, members of the Ethiopian Defense Force did not take any revenge measures, he said.

Major General Mohammed Tessema was unequivocal when he said that it is the Ethiopian Defense Forces that are involved in the law enforcement operation in Ethiopia’s Tigray region.

“If human rights groups are making the claim [about human rights abuse by Eritrean troops] on the basis of factual information, the Defense Force will respond. ”

What we know is that, he continued, the junta attacked us, and we are the ones who attacked the Junta and broke its column.

Major General Mohammed Tessema made reference to a massacre in Maikadra, but the media did not give the coverage that the issue deserves.

He was also asked about the security situation in the region and the alleged ongoing fighting between the Ethiopian Defense Forces and what the government calls remnants of the TPLF forces.

The fight is complete, he said. But there are still skirmishes in some parts of the region.

On Monday, some media outlets reported that armed TPLF groups ambushed a bus traveling from Mekelle to Addis Ababa, and at least six passengers were reportedly killed. Ten others were reportedly injured. The victims are said to be recent graduates of the University of Mekelle. The attack reportedly occurred on Thursday. It was during the past week that Yemane Nigues, an activist for Ethnic Tigray and two other escorts were killed outside of Mekelle.
