Epic Games, the creator of Unreal Engine, one of the most successful game engines to date, has unveiled Unreal Engine 5, its next-generation authoring tool, which features real-time images of a PlayStation 5 development kit.
The PlayStation 5 technical demo, titled Lumen In Nanite Land, was specifically created by Epic Games to showcase the capabilities of Unreal Engine 5. The demo highlights two of the newest and most powerful technologies for the upcoming engine: Lumen and Nanite. Lumen is a global lighting system that will enable photorealistic lighting in games, while Nanite is a virtual geometry system that allows artists to import and render 3D models and environments made up of billions of polygons. “I think a lot of people [will ask], ‘Oh is [the demo] real? “But you know the demo was taken from the back of a PlayStation 5 development kit,” said Epic Games chief technology officer Kim Libreri. IGN. “An HDMI cable went into a disc burner and played in real time: no editing, no tricks, that’s what comes out of the box.”
While the demo shown above is fully playable, it will unfortunately not launch as a real game. Libreri said IGN that if GDC happened, the conference was going to be held in March, but was canceled due to COVID-19, fans would have had a chance to “play through the thing”.
It is also noteworthy that this is the first time that players have glimpsed any game (demo or otherwise) running on PlayStation 5, which Sony confirmed yesterday (May 13) that it was on the way for a 2020 holiday launch.
The Unreal Engine 5 will support Microsoft’s PS5 and Xbox Series X, although it will only be available in late 2021. Until then, consoles will use Unreal Engine 4.25. The PS4, Xbox One, PC, iOS and Android will also receive the Unreal Engine 5 treatment next year, according to the website’s timeline.
Along with the launch of the tech demo, Epic Games has also announced that it will forgo its royalties on games, the first $ 1 million earned in revenue from games that use the engine. More information can be found here.
Epic Games also confirmed that Fortnite, its free online multiplayer Battle Royale, will be available on PS5 and Xbox Series X at launch. According to reports, it will support cross play and cross progression.
