Elon Musk has a plan to ensure humanity’s long-term survival: we must become an interplanetary species in a space-faired civilization.
The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX was a guest on the ‘Sway’ podcast, where he revealed details of the Starship rocket poised to take people to Mars and some bits of ‘pessimism’.
He told the host, Kara Swisher, that “eventually the sun will expand and engulf the Earth,” saying that humans need to go to Mars.
“This is surely going to happen, but not anytime soon,” Musk said.
The billionaire also noted that SpaceX’s reusable spacecraft will be key to turning his plan into reality, and said humans could take flight on the rocket in just two years.

Although Musk predicts that the sun will incinerate Earth, scientific research from the University of Warwick said it will happen, but our sun won’t come to an end for at least another six billion years.
Musk has had his heart set on colonizing Mars for many years and has not been shy about how he plans to make it happen.
The key to turning this dream into reality will be SpaceX’s massive Starship rocket, which has undergone testing and construction at the company’s Boca Chica facility in Texas.
“I think we will launch Starship sometime next year, around August,” Musk said.
The billionaire also noted that SpaceX’s reusable spacecraft will be key to turning his plan into reality, and said humans could take flight on the rocket in just two years.
“We will make it work in automatic mode, without people.”
“I think it will be safe for people in two years, but definitely in three years.”
Swisher asked Musk if he plans to embark on the journey aboard the rocket, but the CEO said he has not thought about it, but does not rule out the idea.
Musk has previously said in the past that SpaceX would need to produce 1,000 Starship rockets over a nine-year period to get a million people to Mars, and he told Swisher that he believes the company is succeeding.
“We can reduce the cost of space, so we’re saving the taxpayer a lot of money,” Musk said.
“We are advancing launch technology by having reusable rockets.”

There are currently several players in this space game, including Jeff Bezos, owner of Blue Origin.
This firm and SpaceX are competing for their vehicle to take the first woman and the next man to the moon, as well as being the first to launch tourists into space.
However, both Musk and Bezos are looking at the long-term survival of the human race, although they have different ideas on how to ensure that we survive.
Musk sees migration to different planets as the top priority, while the owner of Blue Origin envisions humanity moving to huge space stations.
“But whatever it is, if you have advanced rockets, you can decide if you want to live on a space station or on Mars,” Musk said.

Musk unveiled the first Starship prototype in 2019, with the main goal of sending humans to Mars.
The CEO expected the rocket to rise into low orbit by March this year and have people inside by the end of 2020.
However, the Starship show has experienced a number of bumps since 2019, which Musk mentioned in a separate interview earlier this month.
“I hope we do a lot of flights,” Musk said. The former may not work. This is uncharted territory.

WHAT IS ELON MUSK’S ‘BFR’?
The BFR (Big F *** ing Rocket), now known as the Starship, will complete all missions and is smaller than the ones Musk announced in 2016.
The SpaceX CEO said the rocket would make its first trip to the red planet in 2022, carrying only cargo, followed by a manned mission in 2024 and claimed that other SpaceX products would be ‘cannibalized’ to pay for it.
The rocket would be partially reusable and capable of flying directly from Earth to Mars.
Once built, Musk believes the rocket could be used to travel on Earth, and says passengers could get anywhere in less than an hour.
