The DJI Mini was DJI’s best-selling drone, dominating drone sales.
So what do you do for an encore? How about higher resolution, such as the ability to record in 4K video, and a larger image sensor?
Like the original Mini, the new Mini II is roughly the size of a smartphone, so it easily fits in a backpack. Based on an early look, the Mini II is sure to be another great seller.
Another change from last year: a higher list price, $ 449, $ 50 more than the price of the original version. DJI says the extra price is for the higher resolution sensor and 4K video. The Mini was heavily discounted over the holidays last year, at $ 299.
In our tests on the beach, in the morning light and at sunset, we saw intense colors and uniform exposure.
One hit: we got to the beach at 5:30 am and the drone wasn’t flying. An error message said it was too dark. When we tried it again at 7am, once the sun came up, and there were no problems.
A big issue for many drone travelers is battery life. Once airborne and sailing, it’s never fun to find those annoying beeps telling you you’re running low. DJI says the Mini II can stay in the air longer than the original Mini, in just over 31 minutes
And as good as the pictures look, the drone’s processing chip, while larger, is still smaller than the 1/2-inch size of the Mavic Air II drone, which retails for $ 799 and the full 1 chip. inch. of the Mavic Pro II, which retails for $ 1,599.
The Mini’s business card is its size. It is so small and light; it seems to weigh practically nothing. That’s great for slipping into a backpack and taking it everywhere. And it just works.
Turn it on, go airborne, fly, and come home. It’s hard to put into words how wonderful this is, but it seems more fluid than some of the other drones.
If you’re new to drones, or have never got your hands on last year’s Mini, the new Mini would be a great place to start. It would also make a nifty gift for your child, due to the low cost and ease of use. Just remember to follow FAA guidelines that do not allow the call not to fly higher than 400 feet, in crowded areas, over the heads of oncoming people or cars.
What flying camera is it for me? The new Mavic Air 2 or Mavic Pro?
