As the global community continues to grapple with COVID-19 (coronavirus), the Atlantic Council is open for business. All business, meetings and events, however, are taking place virtually. For more information, see a statement from our President and CEO.
In responding to COVID-19, many African countries face significant obstacles. Dr. John Nkengasong, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Africa (CDC), is at the forefront of the continent’s response and has called this pandemic an “existential threat” to Africa. Many African communities are unable to implement social distancing measures, have little or no access to clean water for handwashing, lack sufficient social safety nets, and face considerable resource constraints. With these challenges in mind, this timely event will strive to answer the most pressing policy questions. Namely, what steps are public officials and communities taking to mitigate the threats from the coronavirus pandemic? What regional and international cooperation could strengthen the response? What will a post-COVID-19 future be like for Africa? And what can be done to strengthen capacity against future crises?
Join the Atlantic Council Africa Center at 10:00 a.m. (EDT) Tuesday, April 28 for a virtual discussion on the coronavirus response and challenges in Africa with Dr. John Nkengasong from the CDC for Africa, moderated by the senior member of the Africa Center, Mr. Cameron hudson, and with additional comments from HE. Jessye Lapenn, Ambassador of the United States to the African Union.
