A long-rumored Diablo 2 remaster is reportedly in the works of Activision affiliate Vicarious Visions, the creators of the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy remastering compilation.
This comes according to a report from the French publication Actu Gaming (via PC Gamer), whose editor previously predicted correctly Diablo 4, Shadowlands and Overwatch 2 announcements ahead of their official announcements at Blizzcon 2019.
And it’s kind of amazing considering what we heard last year. During ExileCon 2019, the creators of the Max Schaefer series, Erich Schafer and David Brevik revealed how they lost all of the Diablo 2 source code.
“Not just our code, but all of our assets,” said Max Schaefer at the time. “Irrevocably, fatally corrupted.”
“Everything is gone,” added the other Schaefer brother, Erich. “We were supposed to have a backup, but we neglected it. We spent a day or two in total panic. “
While the team was able to finish Diablo 2 by taking snippets from various builds and sections that the developers had in-house, that original source code was still lost, including countless art assets. “It would make it very difficult for Blizzard to do a remastering of Diablo 2 because all the assets we use are no longer there,” added Erich Schaefer. “They would have to do it from scratch.”
Meanwhile, while we wait for official confirmation, a modder has released his hat to the ring with his own Diablo 2 offer. Last month, modder Ram released his own full remake of the game created within Crate Entertainment’s Grim Dawn. Called Reign of Terror, the mod is a complete remake, not a 1: 1 copy, of the ARPG, it includes all the content and classes present in the original Diablo 2, as well as its Lord of Destruction expansion.
